Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of PlateCompass and set important limits around food and health guidance.

Last updated: July 21, 2026

Important: PlateCompass provides general educational food guidance. It is not a medical device, diagnosis, treatment plan, emergency service, or substitute for a doctor or registered dietitian. AI and image results can be wrong.

1. Acceptance of these terms

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) apply to the PlateCompass web and iOS apps, analysis service, and website (together, the “Service”). By accessing or using the Service, you agree to these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. Who may use PlateCompass

You must be legally able to agree to these Terms. If you are under the age of majority where you live, a parent or legal guardian must review and agree to these Terms for you. The Service is not directed to children under 13.

3. Permission to use the Service

We grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the Service for lawful personal or internal business purposes, subject to these Terms. We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Service.

4. Your photos and other content

You keep ownership of photos, questions, messages, and other content you submit (“Your Content”). You give us a limited permission to process Your Content only as needed to provide, secure, and support the Service, including sending a requested photo to our configured AI provider and using a detected barcode to retrieve public product facts.

You are responsible for Your Content and confirm that you have the right to submit it. Avoid including faces, identifying documents, medical records, or unrelated sensitive information in food photos.

5. Food and health disclaimer

PlateCompass offers general, cholesterol-aware food education based on the information it can infer or retrieve. It does not know your complete health history, laboratory results, medications, allergies, dietary restrictions, portion sizes, ingredients, or preparation methods.

  • Do not use PlateCompass to diagnose, prevent, monitor, treat, or cure a disease or medical condition.
  • Do not start, stop, or change medication or prescribed treatment based on the Service.
  • Do not rely on the Service for allergy, contamination, food-safety, pregnancy, infant-feeding, or emergency decisions.
  • Consult a qualified clinician or registered dietitian for advice specific to you.

If you think you may be experiencing a medical emergency, contact local emergency services immediately.

6. AI and product-data limitations

The Service uses automated image analysis and may rely on third-party product data. Outputs may be incomplete, outdated, or inaccurate. A photo can hide ingredients and preparation details; labels can be blurry; menus change; products can be reformulated; and barcode databases can contain errors. Always verify important information against current packaging, restaurant information, and qualified professional advice.

7. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service unlawfully or infringe another person’s rights.
  • Submit content you do not have permission to process.
  • Attempt to evade rate limits, probe for vulnerabilities, overwhelm the Service, or interfere with its operation.
  • Use automated means to extract data or make high-volume analysis requests without our written permission.
  • Misrepresent PlateCompass output as medical advice or as a guaranteed assessment of a food.

8. Third-party services

PlateCompass relies on third-party infrastructure and services, which may include hosting, an OpenAI-compatible AI provider, Open Food Facts, Web3Forms, email providers, and Apple distribution services. Their own terms and policies may apply. We are not responsible for third-party services or data outside our control.

9. Intellectual property

The Service, including its software, design, text, name, and logo, is owned by us or our licensors and protected by applicable intellectual-property laws. Except for the limited license above, these Terms do not transfer any ownership or trademark rights to you. Your Content remains yours.

10. Feedback

If you send ideas or feedback about PlateCompass, you allow us to use them without restriction or compensation, and without an obligation to treat them as confidential. Do not send information you need us to keep confidential.

11. Disclaimer of warranties

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, reliability, availability, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not promise that the Service or any result will be complete, current, error-free, or suitable for your circumstances. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranty exclusions, so some of these exclusions may not apply to you.

12. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we and our contributors will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or loss of data, profits, goodwill, or business opportunity, arising from or related to the Service. Our total liability for all claims related to the Service will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid us for the Service in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim or CAD $50. These limits do not apply where liability cannot legally be limited.

13. Suspension and termination

You may stop using the Service at any time. We may limit, suspend, or terminate access if we reasonably believe you violated these Terms, created risk for the Service or others, or if operation is no longer practical. Sections that by their nature should survive termination will continue to apply.

14. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms as the Service changes. We will post the updated version here and revise the date above. By continuing to use the Service after revised Terms take effect, you accept the revised Terms.
